Palm Reader: an Interactive Sculpture

Plaster, Wire Mesh, Spraypaint, Clay, Video

2.5′ x 3′ x 3′ ft

“Palm Reader” is an interactive artwork inspired by fortune telling and human interaction in a world that is increasingly regimented and distant. As the viewer reaches out their hands under the provided sensor, a projector displays their hands with a stopmotion animation overlaid onto their hands. Using Touchdesigner, the viewer can alter the positions and gestures of their hands to have different animations play and describe ways that relationships develop in our distant tech world. Focusing on the interaction of the artwork, this piece allows the audience engage with their potential future.

This work was created for my time at the Nguyen Wahed Art Residency in Manhattan, where I was able to see how new media sculptures will be shared with diverse audiences. The proof of concept for the sculpture was built with wire mesh, plaster, and spray paint. Future iterations will be scaled down and built with styrofoam and plaster.
